Trillion to Roll Out WiMAX Broadband Network Educational Trials
Broadband Wireless Trials Set to Start in Q1 2006, Trillion seeking K-12 School districts to Test WiMAX Technology
AUSTIN, TEXAS – October 31, 2005 – Trillion, the leading service provider of fixed wireless and fiber wide area networks for K-12 school districts in the United States, today announced that trials of broadband wireless networks using Intel Corporation’s IEEE 802.16-2004-based WiMAX© technology are set to begin in the first quarter of 2006. WiMAX, short for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a standards-based wireless technology that provides wireless high-speed, last-mile broadband connectivity. Trillion plans on including WiMAX technology as part of its Secure Education Network service offering to K-12 schools. Currently, Trillion provides high-speed broadband network services using both licensed and license exempt wireless technologies. WiMAX technology will expand the breadth of wireless coverage and increase ease of deployment to school sites.
Trillion networks are optimized to support converged data, voice and video education initiatives such as distance learning, eLearning applications, and telephony. A typical Trillion WAN is constructed using gigabit layer 3 switching fabric to support wireless and fiber connectivity speeds at up to 1GB. Utilizing WiMAX technology, Trillion will enhance current networking offerings, enabling Trillion to tie in additional sites that have not previously been accessible.
As Trillion initiates educational customer trials in 2006, the company is seeking school districts with high wide area network bandwidth requirements and challenging connectivity issues. Through these trial programs Trillion will demonstrate WiMAX’s ability to deliver high-speed wireless broadband and Internet access to previously inaccessible locations.
“Working with companies like Intel, Trillion is able to help our customers with reliable, industry leading, broadband solutions,” said Bear Poth, CEO of Trillion. “We anticipate WiMAX connectivity will make it easier and more cost-effective for new and existing broadband users to enjoy safe, secure, wireless Internet access.”
“Trillion’s expanding educational customer base is a strong showcase for Intel-based WiMAX technology,” said Terry Smithson, Education Strategist for Intel. “When a Trillion customer uses a WiMAX enabled broadband network to connect K-12 campuses that can be several miles apart, the district will no longer have to go through the expense of hardwiring them. WiMAX will help schools improve learning by getting wireless broadband connectivity to rural campuses.”
